Overcoming the Problem of Brittleness with the Metacognitive Loop

چکیده

The metacognitive loop (MCL) is an architecture for automated noting, repairing, and learning from errors. Initial work on this award involved builing special-purpose MCL programs for each individual application domain. Later in the award period a more uniform approach was designed that employs a general framework providing ontologies for types of Indications, Failures, and Repairs. This allows the past results in different domains to be achievable by ;igle MCL module, changing only the domain and the IFR ontologies. As a consequence, the investigators are now positioned (starting in 2009, with a new award) to begin to build a general-purpose MCL module that, when "attached* to a given host program H and an initial set of IFR ontologies, can adapt to the domain that H lives in (and in the process adapt the ontologies to better fit that domain) so that H+MCL guides itself to become less brittle.

Logic, Self-awareness and Self-improvement: the Metacognitive Loop and the Problem of Brittleness

This essay describes a general approach to building perturbation-tolerant autonomous systems, based on the conviction that artificial agents should be able to notice when something is amiss, assess the anomaly, and guide a solution into place. This basic strategy of self-guided learning is termed the metacognitive loop; it involves the system monitoring, reasoning about, and, when necessary, al...

Ontologies for Reasoning about Failures in AI Systems

Brittleness is a common problem among AI systems. Autonomous systems, including those that learn, may be faced with unanticipated situations that cause decreased performance, or in the worstcase, catastrophic failures from which the system cannot recover. In this paper, we describe a construct called the metacognitive loop (MCL) that allows AI systems to monitor their own behavior, generate exp...

Clashes in the Infosphere, General Intelligence, and Metacognition: Final project report

Humans confront the unexpected every day, deal with it, and often learn from it. AI agents, on the other hand, are typically brittle—they tend to break down as soon as something happens for which their creators did not explicitly anticipate. The central focus of our research project is this problem of brittleness which may also be the single most important problem facing AI research. Our approa...

A Comparison of the Metacognitive Knowledge of Weak and Strong Students in Problem Solving

This study sought to compare the metacognitive knowledge profile of weak and strong students in problem solving. For achieving this purpose, one hundred students of the second educational District of Tehran were chosen by cluster sampling. They responded individually to the questions of "the Metacognitive Questionnaire Interview" and in the next step their performance in the pendulum problem so...
